Article „Transparency, neutrality, voice, and respect: How procedural fairness considerations affect AI acceptability in algorithmic societies“ published

In an article with Pedro C. Magalhães, Sveinung Arnesen, Christoph Kern, Daniel S. Schiff, and Tom R. Tyler, we investigate what shapes public acceptance of artificial intelligence. Using nationally representative survey data from Portugal, the study show that perceptions of procedural fairness—such as transparency, neutrality, voice, and respect—matter more for AI legitimacy than perceived personal or societal benefits and risks. The study also finds that familiarity with AI is unevenly distributed across social groups, contributing to divides in trust and legitimacy. Overall, the article argues that procedural integrity is essential for the public acceptance of AI systems.
